Discuss your coverWith extensive experience auditing and working with waste sites throughout the UK, I provide practical WAMITAB competence and technical support for waste operators, helping sites maintain the appropriate level of management and operational oversight.
Technical competence isn't just about holding the right certificate, it's about understanding how a waste site operates in the real world. Having audited numerous waste facilities throughout the UK, I understand the practical challenges faced by operators and site managers, from waste acceptance and storage through to site operations, environmental controls, health and safety and compliance.
Practical advice. Experienced oversight. Clear communication. A focus on compliance and risk.
WAMITAB technical competence
The CIWM/WAMITAB Operator Competence Scheme provides a recognised framework for demonstrating technical competence at permitted waste facilities. The requirements are risk-based and depend on the type of waste activity and facility being operated.
For operators, having the appropriate technically competent person available is an important part of demonstrating that the site is being properly managed. I can provide support where your business requires experienced technical competence cover, subject to the requirements of your permit, activity and the applicable regulator.
When might you need competence cover?
Many situations call for additional technical competence support.
TCM holiday or sickness cover
Your usual technically competent person may be unavailable due to annual leave, illness or other commitments. Having an experienced person available helps provide continuity and reduce the risk of a gap in technical management.
Staff changes
If your existing TCM is leaving the business or you're recruiting a replacement, temporary competence support can help bridge the gap while you make longer-term arrangements.
New or changing operations
Changes to your waste activities, site operations or permit arrangements can create additional requirements. Experienced support helps you understand what needs to be considered.
Additional site support
Even where a site has an established TCM, additional independent experience can add value, particularly where operations are complex or there are areas requiring improvement.
More than a name on a certificate
A competent manager should understand the site's activities, recognise the risks, and be able to identify where improvements are required. This can include consideration of:
Independent experience that adds value
After working on and auditing numerous waste sites, every facility is understood to be different. The aim isn't simply to identify problems, it's to understand why they're happening and help operators put practical controls in place. Where issues are identified, recommendations can be prioritised according to risk, so management can focus on the areas that matter most.
Supporting waste operators across the UK
Whether you operate a waste transfer station, recycling facility, treatment site, recovery operation or another permitted waste facility, maintaining appropriate technical competence is an important part of effective site management.
WAMITAB & TCM questions
What is WAMITAB?
WAMITAB (the Waste Management Industry Training and Advisory Board) administers the CIWM/WAMITAB Operator Competence Scheme, the recognised framework for demonstrating technical competence at permitted waste facilities in the UK.
What does a Technically Competent Manager (TCM) do?
A TCM demonstrates that a permitted waste site is being properly managed by someone who understands its activities, recognises the risks, and can identify where improvements are needed. Requirements are risk-based and depend on the type of waste activity and facility.
Can I get temporary WAMITAB cover for holiday or sickness?
Yes. If your usual technically competent person is unavailable due to annual leave, illness or other commitments, temporary cover helps provide continuity and reduces the risk of a gap in technical management.
Do I need a new TCM if my current one is leaving?
If your existing TCM is leaving the business or you're recruiting a replacement, temporary competence support can bridge the gap while you make longer-term arrangements, so your site remains compliant throughout.
